October 2015 - Four Hour Gig - by Jeremy Steding

.............And that’s right; I’m gonna throw my Song of The Month man, Jeremy Steding, right in that mix.

Texas Country has always been much more interesting than Nashville. Texas is where artists go to thrive away from the creepy, weird, over-wrought accents and clichés of Nashville Country. It’s were they go to do what they want and not become cheap. It’s where they go because Texans appreciate individuality and uniqueness, and know that familiarity breeds contempt. Texans like real Country, and real Country is good.

Jeremy Steding is a country artist out of Austin, Texas. The Song of the Month is Four Hour Gig. It’s a song about what it’s like when you are in a real gigging band doing small bar circuits.  Bands don’t make a lot these days (never did) and who sells records besides Lady Ga Ga and shitty Nashville groups? The truth is, when you’re coming up, you’re working for the love of it, and for what the club has to offer – often just the door.

A fun proposition for an intrepid soul, but makes you nervous when rent is due. In Four Hour Gig Jeremy Steding says, “I ate okay today”. Wow! There are scads of “On The Road Songs” most from big artists exploring/exploiting the other side of fame; mining pity for the poor Rock Star. Steding and the boys pile in a van, play a four hour gig for about $100.00 a man, and love it – even if they don’t eat so well most of the time.

Jeremy Steding is up-and-coming and if the world is right he’ll get there. He writes a great song and since I’m late I’m cutting him a little shorter than he deserves, but here are some things to think about when you check him out – and you will:

  1. The Irish influence, especially on Four Hour Gig. I asked him about it, he says it’s a big influence. I love the way he incorporates it into his Country.

  1. His anachronistic voice. No hokey twang here, in fact I hear Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot in both his voice and style. It’s a cool and unique baritone influenced by the 70s. And he writes great ballads.

  1. Great sound, cracker jack band and just damn good songs. Nashville is so produced. Texas country is more raw and real. Steding is real, and he’s real good. Check it out on iTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/jeremy-steding/id303451823

A lot of Texas Country greats never made it big except in Texas where the fans are rabid for home-state artists. I hope Jeremy Steding does make it big and gets what he deserves, but I’m sure he’ll be playing 200 nights a year to red hot Texas fans. That’s a pretty good way to go.
